Is the Bible Heading Towards a Ban in America? A Discussion with 'Disciples in the Moonlight' Director Brett Varvel

Updated: Nov 28, 2025

# Disciples in the Moonlight Just Hit Us Right in the Chest

Posted by Beto & Mili on christianpodcast.com

Familia, we just finished recording with Brett Varvel (actor + director of *Disciples in the Moonlight*) and… wow. We’re still processing. Quiet tears, loud “amén” moments, and a whole lot of conviction. That’s what this conversation did to us.

Interview with Brett Varvel

The movie drops you into a near-future America where the real Bible is illegal. Seven normal believers risk everything to smuggle God’s unchanged Word to underground churches while the government pushes a sanitized, feel-good version called the “Enlightened Truth” Bible.

One question started it all (Brett said it haunted him for ten years):

“If tomorrow it became illegal to own a real Bible… what would YOU actually do?”

That question sat heavy on us too. We’ve both said before, “I know enough Scripture, I’d be fine.” Watching the movie and hearing Brett talk made us realize how quickly we can deceive ourselves.

Here are the parts we can’t stop talking about:

1. The Bible isn’t just a book we carry; it’s God still speaking

Brett called it God’s love letter and living, breathing revelation. When we decide certain parts are “outdated” or use AI to rewrite verses so they fit our lives better… we’re not updating the Bible. We’re creating a different god.

2. The creepiest thing in the movie is how normal the fake church looks

Same worship songs, same lighting, same coffee bar… just a few “small” changes to Scripture. It’s already happening in real life, and it’s happening inside buildings that still have the word “church” on the sign.

3. Family division is the hardest mission field

Mili opened up about family members who’ve distanced themselves because we won’t celebrate what the Bible calls sin. Brett reminded us: love isn’t pretending everything is fine; love warns the person you love the most that the bridge is out. And yes, Jesus said they’ll hate us; just like they hated Him first.

4. We still have freedom… today

The movie isn’t trying to predict tomorrow; it’s trying to wake us up today. Brett kept asking, “What are we doing with the freedom we still have?” Are we bold? Are we silent? Are we living like Jesus is actually worth everything?

We walked away grateful, challenged, and honestly more in love with Jesus and His Word than when we started.

So here’s our plea: go see *Disciples in the Moonlight*

In theaters July 17–24. Take your family, your life group, your skeptical friend. Fill the seats. Let the Holy Spirit use this story the way only He can.

Because one day every single one of us is going to have to answer the question the movie keeps asking:

Is Jesus really worth it?

We already know our answer. We pray this movie helps you know yours too.
