Modern-day Turkey holds profound biblical significance. It is home to the seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation, the ancient city of Ephesus where the Apostle Paul ministered, and Nicaea, where the Nicene Creed was articulated 1,700 years ago. Yet today, out of a population exceeding 85 million, fewer than 200,000 people follow Jesus Christ.
Across the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA), where the roots of Christianity first took hold, millions live in societies where the Gospel is virtually absent, legally restricted, or met with severe opposition.
Beto and Mili sat down with John Cerniglia, President of SAT-7 USA, to discuss how an unblockable medium is quietly revitalizing the Church in places thought unreachable.
"We actually register with the governments as a Christian ministry because we want to be friendly. We’re not hostile towards governments... We simply say: let us be a blessing to Christians who are already there, let us provide education and encouragement for them."
The Technology Unshackling the Gospel: Satellite TV
In the Western world, media has largely shifted to high-speed internet and on-demand streaming. However, across North Africa and the Middle East, satellite broadcasting remains king:
Ubiquitous Reach: More than 95% of households across the region consume video content via free-to-air satellite dishes mounted on rooftops.
Censorship-Proof: Unlike websites and social apps that authoritarian regimes can throttle, block, or monitor, satellite TV signals originate from outside national borders and beam straight down into living rooms. They cannot be censored, scrambled, or shut down by local authorities.
A Safe Haven for Seekers: For individuals living under strict surveillance or intense family pressure, turning on a satellite channel behind closed doors offers complete privacy to learn about Jesus.
Breakthroughs in Restricted Lands: From Turkey to Iran
While modern political tensions dominate news headlines, God's Spirit is actively at work behind closed doors.
50 Inquiries a Day from Iran: Despite rigid crackdowns on domestic Christian activity, SAT-7’s Persian channel reaches an estimated half-million viewers in Iran. Everyday believers and seekers secretly initiate around 50 conversations per day with counseling teams, eager to ask questions about Christ.
A Ministry of Honor and Blessing: Rather than adopting an antagonistic posture toward regional governments, SAT-7 operates transparently wherever possible. In countries like Turkey, the network registers openly, positioning its content to serve, educate, and encourage the indigenous Christian minority while living out Christ's call to peace and integrity.
Media as the Modern Frontier of Global Missions
Two decades ago, pioneering Christian media meant navigating traditional broadcast television with limited access. Today, the convergence of satellite television, social media, and direct messaging allows ministry leaders to bridge cultural divides and disciple isolated believers in real time.
When traditional mission workers cannot enter a territory, satellite airwaves travel freely past physical walls and guarded checkpoints to declare the Good News of hope and reconciliation.
